Insomnia… Again and again

by admin on Aug.18, 2010, under Me

Here It goes again, since the first day of Ramadan I can’t sleep.

My caffeine intake ends around 6pm and substituted by water till I fall asleep.
Since Ramadan arrived here the best night I managed 4 hours of sleep, with last night a mere 2 hours, i spent my day wasted on the sofa as if I am stoned, every damn muscle in my body hurts, black bags under my eyes look scary, food intake is at a minimum and that is really scary.

The problem is I’m not having issues that depress me, I’m not worrying about anything, my mind is blank (as if there was anything in it to begin with.) and I can’t figure what’s the problem.

I’m not gonna visit a doctor, as driving right now in Ramadan is scary and the traffic is unimaginable, and the fact that the doctor will give me the usual sermon:

1. Stay away from caffeine, drink a warm glass of milk before you go to sleep.
2. Workout, do some sports that will tire you.
3. Eat lite food for dinner like a salad, don’t sleep on a full stomach.
4. Take these pills once a day, it will relax you.
5. If those pills don’t work, take these pills, they will put you out for sure.

Other doctors who tried to be more helpful than the previous doctor would suggest routine as an effective way to kill insomnia, pick a time every night to sleep, let’s say 11pm you be in bed, every single day, slowly your biological clock will fix itself and soon you will be sleeping like a baby.

#4 is bad, those pills mellows you out, some cases transforms you into… Let’s say a neutered pet, only thing you do is sit and stare.

Aside from #5 none works for me.

Come on sleep, what did I do wrong for you to run away from me? Come back, I’ll be nice to you I promise, I’ll shower more often, I’ll dress up for you.

God dammit.

A month with the iPad

by admin on Jul.13, 2010, under IT

It’s been almost a month since I got the iPad, here is a summary of what I have done on this gadget

Read 3 books using iBooks:
By way of deception – Victor Ostrovsky
The Appeal – John Grisham
The Associate – John Grisham

iBooks for me is an awesome app, especially the dictionary and highlight functionality, personally it beats kindle, eReader and Stanza, on the iPhone Stanza is the king.

RSS
With the iPad I scan and read +1000 items a day using Reeder App and google reader (for Arabic content,) till now I didn’t find a decent rss reader that renders Arabic feeds correctly.

Video:
I’ve been enjoying watching documentaries and sitcoms using Air Video, it’s an absolutely stunning and invaluable app, I usually tend to watch videos while preparing/eating food.

YouTube on the iPad is amazing I’ve been heading to YouTube whenever I want to search for a “how to” thing, surprisingly you can find anything on YouTube these days.

Games:
I’m not into games, but I enjoy tetris, angry birds, fruit ninja, and line up.

Facebook:
I’m still checking Facebook on my iPhone, due to the lack of an official Facebook app on the iPad, that’s why since i got the iPad I checked Facebook 3-4 times only since I got the iPad.

Twitter:
I absolutely love twitter, I use tweet deck on the iPad, Twitter on the iPhone.
The massive amount of data you get on Twitter is amazing, I use Twitter lists extensively and tweet deck accommodates my list just fine.

Email:
I hate email on the iPad, I hate the portrait right pane left pane, I wished it’s just like the iphone interface, that’s why I use my iphone for email and quick replies, if longer replies needed, I use my iPad or my laptop.

Work:
I use dropbox, docstogo to use with excel and word, and I manage my documents also through google docs, I’m 90% cloud based these days, my laptop turns on when i need to code or Photoshop or to FTP, though I used an app called FTP on the go on my iPhone, but still nothing beats fireftp add-on for firefox, waiting for xmarks or firefox sync to come to the iPad/iPhone.

All in all, this is an awesome gadget, Its abit heavy when you read while lying down, as most major IT blogs on the net reported, this gadget is a content consumption tool, and an entertainment tool, let’s see when they release an update that support multitasking if this gadget can perform typical office work.
